Katherine Sherrington

Public Service

Gwinnett County voters originally elected Katherine Sherrington as tax commissioner in 1984.  She is currently serving her sixth consecutive four-year term.  Katherine is proud to be the first woman elected Tax Commissioner and one of the first two women elected to a county-wide office in Gwinnett’s history.

 

In 2007, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution honored Katherine Sherrington with its Public Official Hero award. She has frequently been voted Gwinnett’s Best Local Elected Leader and Favorite Elected Official by Gwinnett Magazine. The local Professional Women’s Club has named her a Woman of Achievement, and the League of Women Voters honored her as an Exceptional Woman Leader.

 

Katherine has served Gwinnett citizens with distinction, demonstrating effective leadership, integrity and ethical standards.  The Tax Commissioner’s office is a progressive business operation focusing on quality service delivery to the Gwinnett community. 

 

Professional & Community

Katherine Sherrington is active in many professional organizations, locally and state-wide. She was the Charter President of the Tax Commissioners' Technology Development Council of Georgia, and currently serves as that Council's Treasurer. She is a member of the Association County Commissioners of Georgia, and she was a governor’s appointee to the Georgia Department of Driver Services Board from 2001 until 2005.

 

Katherine is an active member and past president of the Duluth Rotary Club and was the Assistant District Governor of Rotary District 6910. She has served on numerous boards and committees in the community and is a graduate of Leadership Gwinnett Class of 1990.

 

Personal History

Katherine Sherrington worked in the accounting field for 12 years before her election as tax commissioner.  She earned a BA degree from the University of Tennessee and an MPA degree from Georgia State University.  Katherine and her husband, Fred Meyer, live in the Snellville area.  They have four grown children, one grandson and two rescued Labrador Retrievers.
